OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY

Occupational Therapy

Our occupational therapists can help patients to safely and independently perform activities of daily living, including cooking, bathing, and dressing. Using wide range of interventions, our therapists adopt tasks and modify the environment to enhance each patients ability to function in their physical and social environment. They provide sensory-motor treatment for strength, endurance, range of motion, and balance. They can also help with memory orientation, cognitive skills and daily life.

What do Occupational Therapists do?

Occupational therapy treats the whole person. Whether they have recovered from injuries, or have developmental or cognitive disabilities affecting their motor skills, emotions, or behaviors. It is unique in that it uses a holistic approach to look not only at the reasons a patient’s participation in activities has been impacted, but also at the patient’s roles and environment. The approach includes wellness promotion, habilitation, and rehabilitation. OTs are helping people to fully engage in daily life!

How Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy overlap?

  • Both educate people about the healing process
  • Both educate people on how to prevent and avoid injury
  • Both play very important roles and specialize in their areas of expertise
  • Both assist people with improving their ability to perform daily activities through training and education

THERAPEUTIC LISTENING PROGRAM

Therapeutic Listening is an individualized program to help students enhance their listening and attention to and communication with the world around them in a more meaningful way. It is a music-based program that teaches and improves a students’ ability to effectively listen, learn and communicate. Listening to the music through specially designed headphones, captures the students’ attention to listen to specific sounds which occur in higher and lower frequencies or tones that are naturally heard in everyday language. The type of music may be like that of a synthesized rhythm, classical or even nursery rhymes.

One unique aspect of Therapeutic Listening is that while actively participating using the music and headphones, a student may continue to participate in the regular routine of the day, be it an occupational therapy session or home task.

This program uses sound stimulation in combination with sensory integration treatment techniques, emphasizing vestibular stimulation, postural and movement strategies to support students who exhibit challenges with:

  • Sensory modulation and self-regulation deficits
  • Vestibular processing problems
  • Visual-spatial deficits
  • Handwriting issues
  • Auditory processing
  • Sensory defensiveness
  • Balance difficulties
  • Speech language deficits
  • Social skill delays
  • Decreased attention hyperactivity

During the course of treatment, a student may experience improvement with:

  • Focus and attention
  • Communication
  • Use of hands for writing and other tasks
  • Posture and muscle tone
  • Movement patterns
  • Sleep patterns
  • Eating

The Therapeutic Listening Program is assigned and monitored by your Occupational Therapist. The Occupational Therapists are fully trained to evaluate and determine a students’ candidacy for treatment.
