Feeding and Swallowing Therapy

Theralympic Speech speech-language pathologists can evaluate, treat, and provide consultations for people with feeding and swallowing challenges. We look at each patient’s oral feeding skills, provide education, and offer strategies to promote safe eating and drinking.

SOME SIGNS/SYMPTOMS

  • Arches back or stiffens when eating
  • Cries/fusses when feeding
  • Falls asleep during feeding
  • Has trouble breathing while eating or drinking
  • Refusing to eat or drink
  • Eats only certain types of textured foods
  • Coughs or gags during meals
  • Drools alot
  • Has trouble chewing
  • Takes a long time to eat
  • Gets stuffy during meals
  • Spits up or throws up alot
  • Not gaining any weight or growing

POSSIBLE CAUSES

  • Nervous system disorders
  • Reflux or other stomach problems
  • Being premature
  • Having a low birth weight
  • Heart disease
  • Cleft lip or palate problem
  • Breathing problems, like asthma
  • Autism
  • Head and neck injury
  • Muscle weakness in face or neck
  • Medicines that makes one sleepy or not hungry
  • Sensory issues
  • Behavioral problems

Testing for Feeding and Swallowing Disorders

Talk to your doctor if you think you or your child has a feeding or swallowing problem. Your doctor can test for medical problems, growth, and weight. A pathologist who knows about feeding and swallowing can look at how you or your child eats and drinks during our evaluation.
