Feeding and Swallowing Therapy
Theralympic Speech speech-language pathologists can evaluate, treat, and provide consultations for people with feeding and swallowing challenges. We look at each patient’s oral feeding skills, provide education, and offer strategies to promote safe eating and drinking.
SOME SIGNS/SYMPTOMS
- Arches back or stiffens when eating
- Cries/fusses when feeding
- Falls asleep during feeding
- Has trouble breathing while eating or drinking
- Refusing to eat or drink
- Eats only certain types of textured foods
- Coughs or gags during meals
- Drools alot
- Has trouble chewing
- Takes a long time to eat
- Gets stuffy during meals
- Spits up or throws up alot
- Not gaining any weight or growing
POSSIBLE CAUSES
- Nervous system disorders
- Reflux or other stomach problems
- Being premature
- Having a low birth weight
- Heart disease
- Cleft lip or palate problem
- Breathing problems, like asthma
- Autism
- Head and neck injury
- Muscle weakness in face or neck
- Medicines that makes one sleepy or not hungry
- Sensory issues
- Behavioral problems
